The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has protested against the participation of the country in the ongoing 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Nigeria is one of the countries that will compete in the competition, which will start on May 12 and ends on May 22nd.
Fifty-seven countries were planned to compete in the games officially starting on Friday, but Kuwait, Libya and Sudan were all forced to pull out for various reasons.
Kuwait is currently banned by the International Olympic Committee, and the efforts to help its athletes compete as independent under the flag of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation failed after the AFP.
CAN asked the Federal Government to immediately withdraw the country’s athletes from the tournament, where they have yet to win a medal.
The Secretary General of CAN, Musa Asake, addressed the President-in-Office, Yemi Osinbajo, in a letter of May 10, 2017, said that the country's participation in the Islamic Games has been a violation of Nigeria's secular status since the competition applies exclusively to Muslim countries ,
The letter, entitled "Illegal Participation of Nigeria in the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation, BAKU 2017", was also copied to Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki and the secretary's office to the government of the Union.
The letter reads: "We have become aware that the Islamic Solidarity Sport Association is organizing its 4th Games, entitled BAKU 2017, in Azerbaijan between May 12 and 22, 2017. We have the information that Nigeria is one of the 57. Countries participating in the Games.
"The organizers confirmed that the games are strictly for Islamic countries because the ISSF is part of the organization of Islamic cooperation.We demand that this allegation and the participation of Nigeria should be investigated because Nigeria in an international commitment that is exclusive Based on religion, violates the spirit and the writing of Section 10 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
"We would like to point out that Nigeria is a secular nation and any false representation should be corrected immediately, and Nigeria's participation should be stopped immediately.
"We also urge you to immediately warn against this illegal act before further damage to the identity of the nation and the attitude of the government of the day as pro-Islam, Nigeria's membership of OIC should be withdrawn from now on . "
