Many of them were pioneers of various African musical genres who have become part of the so-called authentic African sound. This list explores the great men and women who have given the continent an amazing music to listen.
Fela Kuti
Known for his high-octane performances, Fela Kuti is hailed as the greatest African artist that has ever lived. He was a multi-instrumentalist, musician, political activist, composer and pioneer of the musical genre, known as Afrobeat. In the fame of the 70s with his band 'The Africa' 70 'he was popular for singing in Yoruba his mother tongue and Pidgin English, which could be enjoyed by people all over Africa. He died on August 2, 1997. His works are alive.
Miriam Mkeba
Often referred to as Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba is truly the most popular artist emerging from Africa. Her music was concerned with South Africa's socio-political needs under apartheid and defined the sound of South African music. She was a Grammy winner and is known all over the world for signature sound and stage performances.

Multilingual Malian and guitarist, Ali Farka Toure is the most beautiful musician from Mail. His music scene merges the African American jazz with the traditional Malian music has earned him millions of fans worldwide. He is also skilled at playing songs in 10 languages from Mali. He died on March 6, 2006. His works are still alive.

Senegalese singer and percussionist, Youssou N dour was born in the bustling city of Dakar. He is one of the pioneers of popular music, known in Wolof as Mbalax. As a famous singer, songwriter and composer he is very international. His fusion of Mbalex with Cuban, Latin, hip-hop and pop elements earned him an international succession.
Brenda Faisse
Brenda Faissie was a legendary South African pop singer. Affectionately referred to as the queen of African pop Brenda Faisse's story continues to inspire a whole generation of artists. Born in Langa, Cape Town, she went to Soweto, Johannesburg to pursue her dreams of being a star at the age of 18 years. Brenda becomes the lead singer of the populist pop group Brenda & The Big Dudes. This catapulted them to glory, and in 1996 their songs were at the top of the charts, with each of their albums becoming multi-platinum sellers in South Africa. She died on 9 of may,2004. Though dead, her works stil live.
King Sunny Ade
Born to a royal family in Ondo, Nigeria, King Sunny Ade is quite literally music licensing fees. Popularly known for playing juju music, a popular form of Nigerian music from the 80s. His band, King Sunny Ade & His African Beats, is a pan-African collective traveling through Africa and gaining popularity in the US and Europe. Ade was the first person to present the pedal steel guitar of Nigerian pop music.

Lucky Dube was a South African reggae musician from Johannesburg. He is the father of African reggae music. He discovered his musical talents at a young age and entered the band of his cousin at the age of 18 years. They later called the band 'Lucky Dube. The Supersoul' and produced their first album. Supersoul was later dropped by the name and Lucky Dube went on to produce several hit albums and visit the world. He died on October 18, 2007. He is dead but his works not dead.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
A male Grammy-winning male group from South Africa singing the singing style of isicathamiya & mbube. They rose after singing with Paul Simon on his album Grace. With their success, they have become an academy of the kind that teaches people around the world about South Africa and its culture.
Angelique Kidjo
A two-time Grammy Award was won by Singer-Songwriter & Activist from Benin. She is distinguished for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos, which have earned her the title "The greatest living African Diva".
E.T Mensah
Emmanuel Tettey Mensah, known as E.T Mensah, is a multi-instrumental Ghanaian musician who is honored as the "King of Highlife" music. His band "The Tempos" was the toast of the Ghana nightlife in the 1950s and they would travel far beyond West Africa. They also had the honor to play for the President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, on several occasions. He died on July 19, 1996. His works still lives.
