Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on Thursday, escaped death as a bullion van convoy, which belonged to Central Bank of Nigeria, rammed into his convoy on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The Governor Senior Special Assistant on Media, Adejuwon Soyinka, said the incident occurred around Ibafo, while the governor traveled to Lagos for an official assignment.
He said the CBN convoy rammed into the Toyota Hilux escort vehicle of the Governor and crash it.
Soyinka said, "The CBN convoy, which drove dangerously, tried to overtake the governor's convoy without regard for the safety of other road users. In recognizing dangers, the escort commander of the Ogun governor used a public address system installed on his vehicle to warn the CBN convoy to depart from such ruthless driving.
"Not only was the governor escort commander ignored, the CBN convoy driver went ahead to crush his vehicle, then went to other vehicles in the Governor's escort, including the Governor's official car, before being stopped by the security team. "
When responding to the incident, Amosun said: "This is lawlessness and amount of impunity."
He added, "If this could happen to a governor in his area, you can imagine what they would do with our citizens who simply go about their legitimate business."
Amosun expressed disappointment at the ruthless way in which the drivers of the CBN convoy often led the streets and warned that such impunity would not be tolerated within the borders of the Ogun state.
"We will not allow such meaningless and reckless behavior in the Ogun state," Amosun said.
